How To Use Free Website Templates To Build a Website
By Jay Gumbs
If you’ve considered building a website to advertise your business or organization, there are lots of options available for you online. One of these options is using free website templates to build your website. Free website templates are easy to find doing a quick Google search. Just download them to your computer and you're ready to go.
To use the free website templates, you’ll need to unzip the package if its comes zipped up. 7zip.com offers a free utility you can use to unzip the files. Inside the folder with the template files, you’ll have an index template (it’s named index.html) and the image folders as well as a cascading style sheet document.
The most important file here is the index template. You’ll need an HTML editor to edit the index template so that you can put in the content you want before you upload it to your web host. You can also search the internet for ‘free HTML editors’ but I’d recommend Kompozer for doing this.
You can find some YouTube videos to help you through the process of editing your templates. You can use the same index template to edit your other pages – – just be sure to click ‘save as’ and give the page a name like ‘contact.html’ so you don’t overwrite your previously saved page.
Once you’re done editing your templates all you’ll need to do is to upload either through Kompozer’s ftp or using an ftp utility like Filezilla [I use Core FTP Lite ~ Margot] to your hosting account. Make sure your domain is already set up so that you can see your website live on the internet.
Building static websites using free website templates this way can become very tiring. If you’re just building one website with a few pages then this can work very well.
However, regardless of whether the above is the case or you’re going for a bigger site or a lot more websites, you may want to consider using another solution.
I build all my sites with WordPress because it’s faster and easier and there are fewer processes. There are also a few other benefits to using WordPress as your website builder.
I’ve outlined 6 reasons why you should use WordPress to build your next website (as opposed to using free website templates) on my blog. Check it out at: http://www.honestinternetcash.com/6-reasons-choose-wordpress-website
